From Kitchen Table to Canadian Tables: The Heartwarming Story of Duinkerken Foods
In 1994, Brenda Vanduinkerken walked out of a grocery store with tears in her eyes—not because of what she bought, but because of what she couldn’t. She had just been diagnosed with celiac disease, and as a passionate home baker, she was devastated to find the market completely void of gluten-free options. Shelves that once held promise now only brought frustration.
But where others may have given up, Brenda saw an opportunity to bake a new path—not just for herself, but for countless others who felt the same sense of isolation and limitation.
Back in her kitchen on Prince Edward Island, Brenda began experimenting with gluten-free ingredients, determined to recreate the comforting, delicious foods her family had always enjoyed. Muffins, breads, pancakes—the staples of her home—began to take shape again, this time safe for her and just as delicious for everyone else.
As word spread among friends and neighbors, it became clear Brenda had created something truly special. With the support of her family, she packed up samples of her creations, loaded them into the family minivan, and hit the road. From coast to coast, they attended gluten-free expos and community events, meeting fellow Canadians living with celiac disease and offering something that had once felt out of reach: real, delicious food that everyone could enjoy.
By 2005, Brenda’s kitchen experiments had blossomed into something much bigger—Duinkerken Foods was officially incorporated. What started with just three humble products has grown, through heart, hard work, and an unwavering mission, into a proud lineup of over 25 gluten-free products by 2025.
But what truly makes Duinkerken Foods special isn’t just the recipes—it’s the people. Brenda’s daughter Jillian, who was also diagnosed with celiac disease, joined the business after graduating university, bringing new ideas and the same fierce commitment to helping others. Many other family members are also part of the Duinkerken team, united not just by blood, but by a shared passion and purpose.
At Duinkerken, gluten-free isn’t a trend—it’s a personal mission. Every mix, every recipe, every decision is made with care, because we’ve been there. We understand the challenges, and more importantly, we understand the joy that comes from finally finding food that feels like home.
Today, Duinkerken Foods continues to serve families across Canada and beyond, driven by one woman’s determination to bring comfort back to the table—and a family’s love that keeps that mission alive every single day!
